About Chamonix

Chamonix has been known for many years as the mountaineering and skiing capital of France. The resort lies at the foot of Mont Blanc, which at 4810 metres, is one of the highest peaks in Europe. People have been skiing in the snowfields of Chamonix since the late 19th Century and the remains of the ski jump built for the first winter Olympic games in 1924 can still be seen.

Today Chamonix incorporates tradition and a cosmopolitan atmosphere with a wide range of attractions and facilities. There are modern shops, a cinema, casino, bars and nightclubs. Chamonix also boasts an extensive sports centre with squash courts, an open air and indoor swimming pool, facilities for tennis, basketball and judo, a large artificial ice rink and a challenging climbing wall.

There are 5 main ski areas that make up the Chamonix Valley Plus the nursery areas of Les Planards, Le Savoy, La Vormaine and Les Chosalets. The ESF also has a kindergarden with non skiing child care and a children's ski area at Les Cavants in Les Houches.

Le Tour: Lies at the top of the Valley and has record snow falls. To the right of the main Lift station is the beginners area of La Vormaine there are 2 drag lifts here, a good place to learn. At the top of the Gondola is a wide open area with wide blues and red graded pistes. There are 2 sites to this area with a 4 man chair connecting the area to the Swiss side of the valley and a lift down to the village of Vallorcine. There are more challenging pistes on this side.

La Flégère and Le Brévent: are south facing and the only two linked areas in the Valley. There is a new fast moving gondola to the Brevent and a cable car to the La Flérère. In the last few years a lot of the old chair lifts have been replaced with new 6 man high speed chairs in both ski areas. The Brevent area is just above the town centre with skiing at 2525m.

These two area are for everyone, easy to tough and some of the best piste ski ing in the Valley.

Les Grands Montets: This is where the piste and off piste merge, with packed tracked out snow between marked runs to big open blows, testing mogul fields plus a variation of pistes. The Top lift now included on the "Unlimited Ski Pass" is 3300 meters and leads onto glacier terrain with a vertical descent of 1260 meters. There is a marked ungroomed black piste ,there are some interesting off-piste skiing on the Argentiere Glacier. We recommend that you do take a guide to get the best out of this area as there is also crevasse and avalanche danger. You also have the advantage of lift priority with a guide.

Les Houches: is a resort in its own right. There are two main lift stations for this area. The Bellevue telepherique ( cable-car ) which is in the middle of the village and a new fast moving gondolas at Prarion. The skiing here is tree line for all level of skiers plus the Kandahar world cup down hill course If the visibility is bad then this is the place to be.

Courmayer: Just though the Mont Blanc tunnel is the Italian resort of Courmayer. Not challenging skiing but big wide open blows with a geat atmosphere and lunch. Quite often when weather is bad in Chamonix, the other side of Mont Blanc, the sun can be shining. (Courmayer is included on the Unlimited ski pass)
