Situated on a south facing slope within the magnificent Abondance valley, Chatel's traditional alpine charm and picture perfect scenery will leave you enchanted. Châtel has the envious position of the highest village in the Abondance valley. Sitting on the border of the French & Swiss alps at 1200m, Chatel is surrounded by the craggy peaks of the Dents du Midi with a view over the whole valley. There are alpine chalets and pine trees everywhere you look in this Savoyarde village - you won't find any high rise concrete buildings here!

The offering of a traditional alpine village with the modern amenities is unique - Châtel has an old charm atmosphere that is hard to find. In the summer, the sound of cow bells will remind you that Châtel is still a rustic farming village as well as a world class holiday destination. Châtel has been awarded the Station Verte, Station Class and Famille Plus for its unspoilt environment, high standard of tourist facilities and family friendly attitude.

Châtel village lies at an altitude of 1200m with the ski area rising up to 2200m. The terrain is suitable for skiers and boarders of all abilities and holds a fantastic snow record. Whether you enjoy hair raising black runs, tree lined long runs, taking on the pipe, easy blues or off piste powder, Châtel and the Portes du Soleil has it covered.

Châtel is one of 12 linked resorts that make up the impressive Portes du Soleil ski region spanning both France and Switzerland. The area enjoys exceptional snowfall, averaging 8m per year. There are 4 ski lift areas in Chatel, making it easy to start somewhere new each day and experience different pistes. There are direct access to the resorts of Avoriaz, Torgon and Morgins which have onward links to other resorts such as Morzine and Les Gets.

Shopping:
Châtel offers plenty of retail therapy, with outdoor clothing stores, souvenir shops and speciality produce such as French cheese & delicious saucission (Savoyarde cured sausage). Don't miss the weekly Wednesday market from 8am - 12:30pm

Châtel has a good selection of bars, perfect for a lively night or a quiet drink with a spectacular view.

Restaurants:
The village restaurants serve affordable Savoyard specialities such as raclettes, fondues and Tartiflette. There are numerous choices for non French fare too.

The Summer Lifts
Pedestrians & bikers can reach the peaks of the alps effortlessly by using the network of 24 ski lifts to access the trails though out the mountains. Two lifts operate during summer in Châtel - the Super- Châtel lift in the village and Pierre-Longue lift at Pré-la-Joux. Avoriaz can be reached via the Rochassons lift at the top of the Pierre-Longue lift.
