Chalet Gallois is a charming traditional chalet situated in the alpine village of Châtel in the beautiful Abondance Valley, it is only 90 minutes from Geneva Airport and is an ideal location for both winter and summer holidays. Châtel is part of the large Portes du Soleil ski area - a linked area of pistes in both France and Switzerland.

The chalet offers superb self catering holiday accommodation for 10 people. Chalet Gallois is a traditional chalet and is situated only one mile from the centre of the village with easy access to the Super Châtel ski area, and less than 3/4 mile from the Linga ski area.

A free bus service passes the chalet and there is a bus stop opposite the chalet.

Off road parking for two or three cars is available directly in front of the chalet.

Chalet Gallois is spacious and accommodates 10 people in comfort. The chalet is full of character with a large open living area complete with wood burning stove, chestnut flooring and authentic wooden beams. Martin and Sue have over the last five years undertaken extensive renovation and refurbishment of the chalet to a very high standard with the help of local craftsmen.

The open plan living area includes a large dining table providing a focal point for gathering together and discussion of the day’s events. It also includes a kitchen area with an oven, gas hob, dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator. Comfortable seating is provided in front of the large fireplace.

There are five bedrooms – four with double beds and one with two single beds. One of the bedrooms has a mezzanine with extra sleeping area if required. Bedding and towels are available if required. There is also a cot, highchair and baby gate for our younger guests.

There are two bathrooms with a shower, wash hand basin and toilet, together with a cloakroom. There is also an additional bathroom with a ‘Jacuzzi’ style bath, stone wash hand basin and toilet.

There is an additional shower adjoining the sauna.

In addition the chalet has Wifi, satellite TV, a DVD player, Wii games console and iPod compatible Bose sound system. There is also a table football. Books, games and DVDs are available.

In the basement there is a washing machine and tumble drier. There is ample room in the basement for the storage of ski equipment or bikes.

There are two large patio areas with furniture for al fresco dining. There is a pleasant garden area offering both sun and shade, with a mountain stream running alongside the property.

Martin and Sue have been visiting Châtel with their three children for over 20 years. Initially just in the summer, and then both summer and winter holidays were spent at L’Oustalet, the excellent campsite run by Marie-Jo and Philipe Thoule. Over the years they have fallen in love with the village and it’s surrounding area and five years ago they decided to give up caravanning and purchase a chalet, which has undergone extensive renovation with the help of local craftsmen.

Covid-19 Update 5th November 2020
At the moment both French and Swiss authorities are saying that the Portes du Soleil area will be open as normal, with no restrictions on the number of skiers allowed on the slopes and no problem moving between countries. People will need to wear a mask whilst queueing for and riding a ski lift and numbers per lift will be reduced, so expect longer waiting times.  Restaurants and bars will be open but with fewer tables available and masks must be worn when not seated at the table.  The bus service will also operate with a reduced capacity. 

Obviously this is an ever changing scenario and depends very much on what Regional, National and International lockdowns are in place. We wait and see….

About Chatel

Winter in Chatel:
High quality skiing for all levels of ability is available, with access to the large Portes du Soleil ski area with over 650 km of linked pistes up to 2,400 metres high in both Switzerland and France. In addition, local skiing in Châtel and the surrounding Abondance valley is available including cross country skiing.

Night skiing provides an interesting experience at Linga on Thursday evenings.

Ski hire is available near the chalet at both Bernard Sports and Vertical Horizons.

Summer in Chatel:
Châtel has become an ideal destination for both summer and winter holidays. Beautiful scenery, mountain air and early summer flowers are perfect reasons for a Châtel summer holiday. Several of the chairlifts remain open in the summer allowing easy access to the mountains where there are many well marked cycling and walking trails.

Mountain bikes can be hired from a local hire shop near to the chalet.

Local festivals are held in the mountains and the village, many related to their agricultural origins.

One of the best is ‘La Belle Dimanche’ held at Plaine Dranse one Sunday in August.

The tourist board arrange many activities including regular open air concerts and entertainment on the town square.

The local lake – Lac de Vonnes, situated near the Swiss border, provides opportunities for walking, fishing and boating.

The base rate outside the named rental periods is 160€ per night with a minimum stay of 3 nights.
End of stay cleaning and linen and towels are provided free for stays of 7 days and over.
There is a 10% discount for bookings of two weeks or more.

If, on the day before arrival, any of the circumstances outlined below apply to your booked dates, and this results in your booking being cancelled, then you will be entitled to a 100% refund of your accommodation payments.


Valid circumstances covered by these Covid-19 cancellation terms are limited to:

  • official closure of the property due to Covid-19 restrictions
  • if the government of the country where the property is located, imposes a mandatory travel restriction preventing travel either to the country or to the property, or imposes a mandatory quarantine on arrival
  • if the government of your country of departure, imposes a mandatory travel restriction preventing travel either to the country or region where the property is located
  • if the government of your country of departure, advises against all non essential travel to the country or region where the property is located

All other reasons will not be considered a valid reason to utilise the Covid-19 cancellation terms, and the standard cancellation terms will apply. These include, but are not limited to:

  • an unwillingness to travel
  • an inability to travel due to medical reasons (including any related to Covid-19)
  • an inability to travel due to vaccination status
  • individual or household stay-at-home orders

These Covid-19 cancellation terms are valid up to the day before arrival. After this date there will be no refund or credit note should Covid-19 have an impact upon your booking.


Your country of departure will be determined by the address used at the time of booking and this address will apply to all parties on the booking.


It is your responsibility to comply with all relevant health and/or vaccination requirements in the countries you are travelling to and from.
