About Bulgaria
Bansko sits at the foot of the Pirin Mountains in southwest Bulgaria. At around 950 metres the town enjoys a classic alpine climate, cold and snowy in winter with a reliable ski season running from December to April but warm and sunny in summer.
Bansko's fortified old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has quite unique architecture. Wander the cobbled lanes and you'll discover stone houses with carved wooden balconies, hidden courtyards and cosy traditional taverns that have been welcoming guests for generations.
With the Pirin National Park right on the doorstep, Bansko has a lot to offer.
Activities near Bulgaria
Bansko is best known for its skiing and for good reason. With around 70km of well-groomed pistes served by a modern gondola and lift system, it caters to all ability levels. From cruisy blues to more challenging black slopes it's a great choice for mixed groups. For those who want to venture further afield, ski touring into the Pirin backcountry is a spectacular option.
Away from the slopes, there are a range of winter activities: snowshoeing through the pine forests, horse riding in the snow, quad biking, jeep safaris into the mountains and visits to the area's natural thermal hot springs — the perfect reward after a day on the slopes.
For something more relaxed, Bansko's spas and massage treatments are excellent and the town has a rich history with multiple museums, an art gallery and a well-preserved old town with cobbled streets and traditional architecture.
In summer, the mountains attract hikers, mountain bikers and trail runners, with routes ranging from leisurely valley walks to serious high-alpine adventures across the Pirin National Park, past mountain lakes and ancient forests.
The town's traditional mehanas (taverns) serve hearty Bulgarian cuisine and Bansko has a good restaurant scene and lively nightlife. From cosy wine bars or spirited apres-ski bars to late-night venues, the energy keeps going long after the slopes close.
Events like the annual Bansko Jazz Festival in August or the Pirin Ultra Race in September draw visitors from across Europe, making Bansko's calendar pretty full.
