Chamonix lies in a long winding valley at the foot of Mont Blanc. The ski resort is without doubt one of the most famous ski resort in France and in the world. Chamonix ski resort attracts all types of skiers and snowboarders but it has a reputation for providing some of the best and most extreme free riding and off piste skiing in Europe. Chamonix is regarded by many as the birth place of mountain and extreme sports and it certinaly live up to it name.
The resort consists of 5 main ski zones located along the valley.
The Grands Montets area offers the highest skiing with pistes from 1235m - 3300m. Here you can ski or board the glacier and the area has a huge amount of off piste options.
Brevent-Flegere has ski runs from 1030m to 2525m and this area offers the most amazing views of the Mont Blanc. The pistes in this area are largely south facing and there are run to suit are levels.
The Domaine de Balme offer skiing on tree lined pistes between the villages of Le Tour and Vallorcine. There is lots of variety in this area and is probably the area most suited to beginners.
Les Houches is the first village at the mouth of the Chamonix Mont Blanc valley. This area runs from 950m to 1900m and is particularly popular with family. Many of the pistes here also run through the beautiful pine forest.
Last but not least it has to be mentioned the Vallee Blanche. This is glacial valley high up in the mountains where you can ski limitless off piste. To access the area you have to take Europe’s highest cable car to the top of the Aiguille de Midi. Be warned skiing in this area is not for the faint hearted. To go there you should be an experienced skier or boarder and it is always recommended to bring a qualified guide when skiing the Vallee Blanche.
As well is regular skiing, ski touring is very popular in Chamonix and the town is the starting point for many ski touring routes. There are many options with one of the most famous being the Haute Route which travels form Chamonix to Zermatt in Switzerland, and takes 5 days ski touring across the Alps. For the less adventurous there are several day tours available.
There different ski zones are linked together with a very efficient system of ski buses the fee for which is included in your ski pass.
Being a full sized alpine town there is a lot of see and do in Chamonix. The town is alive throughout the year and has lots of bars, restaurants and shopping available. For eating out the choice is endless and you can choose from typical Savoyard cuisine or many international options.
The range of accommodation in Chamonix includes everything from exclusive hotel chains to luxury private chalets, bargain catered chalets, ski apartments and studios and simple family hotels. Don’t confine you Chamonix accommodation search just to the town itself. You can find some very nice ski accommodation in other areas nearby such as chalets in Les Houche and apartments in Le Tour. For the best connections to the ski pistes and après ski it is wise to stay reasonably central but there are also many family chalets in the Les Houche area.

Description of the bars and restaurants in Chamonix
There is as much to do (if not more) in Chamonix in the summer. The town attracts climbers from around the world aiming to tackling some of the most challenging mountains in Europe.
Walking and hiking is also very popular in the summer and Chamonix is the starting point for several Alpine walking routes. Mountain biking in Chamonix is becoming increasing popular and there are not over 20 marked bike routes though the Chamonix valley.
If you are are looking for even more of an adrenaline rush why not try paragliding in the Chamonix valley or canyoning or white water rafting.
Other less risky pursuits involve, golfing in Chamonix, tennis, visit the outdoor swimming pool with water slides, check out one of the many spa centers, skate park, tree adventure park, try the Chamonix fun park.
Or just simply enjoy the amazing scenery that surrounds this magical valley.
